We're not going down without a fight... our recent Instagram Hacking.

Posted by Rebecca Rhodes on

After adapting and diversifying as a business throughout a year of pandemic, we thought our troubles were pretty much almost over. The light at the end of the tunnel and life resuming back to normal is on the horizon and our new collections for spring and summer are starting to come together.

Then, we get a message in our Instagram direct messages, claiming to be Instagram, saying we had breached copyright restrictions. Naturally, we wanted to make sure this wasn't the case as we only use our own content all created by our close knit team. There was a link on this message where we could find out more about what the issue was, and that was the hackers way in.

We we quickly logged out of our own account and any attempts to secure it by entering our information didn't seem to be working. Panic is starting to set in here as we understand the gravity of the situation that someone else, has our account and has locked us out of it.

Then comes an email, our security phone number and email has been changed so not even we can recover it. When Instagram sends a code to validate who you are, that code is now going to the hacker.

What happens next, even took us by surprise. A Whatsapp message to Rebecca, from the hacker.
We were not about to bargain with a hacker, he wouldn't have given the account access back even if we had paid but the cocky message really just took it too far! Over the following 48 hours after this we had frantically tried to contact everyone we could in Facebook and Instagram's teams to prevent us loosing 6 years worth of hard work and a loyal following of 16.7k.
The hacker proceeded to advertise our account for sale to all our followers, and subsequently, delete the whole thing. We are beyond gutted that this has happened. Instagram is one of our biggest channels, it's a lifeline for us as a business and someone has taken it and deleted it as if it is nothing.
We have no choice but to be resilient, to keep fighting, we have survived worse and we will get back up and go again. We know our customers LOVE our brand and we will continue to do everything we can to keep the Rebecca Rhoades label alive throughout 2021. Our website, all other accounts and data remain safe and unharmed by this. We have doubled up on security and have learnt some valuable lessons from this horrible experience!
Please show our new profile @rhoadesfashion some support as every like, share and save helps us recover.
Much love,
RR
